A History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art

American Hotel Parking Lot: Part 2
My memory card got filled rather quick (I also had a lot of other stuff in it). I hope to go there again soon to take more pictures. Plus, I had a hard time taking pictures of the east wall because the sun was setting and the sun's glare made it impossible to take photos. Here are the recent works by UTI crew:

  Stickers Etc.
Here are some stickers I have seen around town lately.

A few meters away from Karma Coffee on Cahuenga Blvd, a suicide sticker note:

American Hotel Parking Lot: Part 1
The walls of the American Hotel's parking lot were recently repainted with new murals by UTI crew.

A few days ago the manager saw me walking around with a camera in hand, and asked me if I wanted to go inside the gated parking lot to have a look. I said hell yes and he let me in to look around.

Stay tuned for more pics.

  That Girl Emily
People have asked me if I know the story behind his billboard that has been recently spotted somewhere (but where?) around town:

I have not seen it in person, and I haven't even seen it until I came across this entry by Travis Keller (where I got the photos above from) on bloggina.la. Some speculation and background info can be found in the comment section.

Or you can just find some background info here which suggests that it is a viral marketing ad.

  101 Coffee Shop
Ever eaten at the 101 Coffee Shop on Franklin Blvd? If you ever do, you should check out the murals out back:

Abbott and Costello, Who's on First

Gene Kelly, Singing in the Rain

This one is my favorite picture of them all. I like how one of the characters that hang out by Graumann's Chinese Theater was included in the painting (Superman in particular, but I guess the others were not). Actually, our local Superman was interviewed by Dan Bakkedahl of The Daily Show recentlyGo here for the clip.

Man One's Mural in Boyle Heights
I took these photos several weeks ago. I was walking on Soto in Boyle Heights and I passed by this strange, strange.... arrangement:

It looks stranger in person. When I got to 1st St and Soto, I took a few photos of Man One's incomplete mural (6,000 sq. ft!):

About the mural (from his website):

I've been contracted by Metro Art to paint a huge 6,000 sq. ft. mural. The theme of the mural is "The Four Pillars" of community: History, Faith, Familia, and Trabajo.

The words will be stylized in bold graff lettering accross each huge section of wall space and anchored at each corner with the portraits of four fallen heroes: Ruben Salazar, Sister Karen (Self Help Graphics founder), Miguel Arenas, Sr. (my grandfather), and Cesar Chavez.

Small black and white angels float throughout the mural carrying icons from the "City of Angels"

Local blogger Ed Fuentes did a recent post about Man One, which you can read here.

  Behind that one Industrial Building...
Remember that abandoned industrial building on 2nd St that I have made several posts about? I barely noticed its backside a few weeks ago.

A close up of my favorite section:

I think this is the darkest mural I have yet to see in L.A.

Previous posts of said industrial building include this one.

  A Shipping Container in Oakland
Sometimes I like to post non-Los Angeles pieces. I haven't done so in a while.

My friend up in Oakland took this photo. She said that it is on the side of a shipping container that seems a permenant fixture near the park in the Port of Oakland.
