Man One's Mural in Boyle Heights
I took these photos several weeks ago. I was walking on Soto in Boyle Heights and I passed by this strange, strange.... arrangement:
It looks stranger in person. When I got to 1st St and Soto, I took a few photos of Man One's incomplete mural (6,000 sq. ft!):
About the mural (from his website):
I've been contracted by Metro Art to paint a huge 6,000 sq. ft. mural. The theme of the mural is "The Four Pillars" of community: History, Faith, Familia, and Trabajo.
The words will be stylized in bold graff lettering accross each huge section of wall space and anchored at each corner with the portraits of four fallen heroes: Ruben Salazar, Sister Karen (Self Help Graphics founder), Miguel Arenas, Sr. (my grandfather), and Cesar Chavez.
Small black and white angels float throughout the mural carrying icons from the "City of Angels"

I don't see how the raccoon is frightening. It looks like a little kid put it together and threw it up there.
I've seen this a lot in the areas I've been driving through.
As for the commissioned art, I think it's awesome. "The Four Pillars" of community: History, Faith, Familia, and Trabajo I never thought of these as being a "whole" community thing, I just thought it was an individual family thing. I'm glad it's been represented through art.
